Gamble Sands is what happens when a links architect gets handed the perfect piece of ground. David McLay Kidd, the guy behind the original Bandon Dunes, built it on pure sand high above the Columbia River in the Washington high desert. Wide fairways, huge rolling greens, fescue running firm and fast, and views clear out to the Cascades. It opened in 2014 and shot straight onto every top-100 list in the country. Drawn hole by hole, laid out the way it actually plays.
What makes it Gamble Sands is that it's hard to beat and impossible to stop smiling about. The fairways are generous on purpose, the ground game is everything, and the reachable par-4 2nd drops you a view of the river valley you don't forget. Kidd built it around fun instead of punishment, and that's exactly why golfers keep making the trek out to the middle of nowhere to play it.
